Varicose Vein Treatments
Varicose veins are a problem for about 30% of the population in this country. Women are more than twice as likely to deal with these unsightly bulging veins as men. These veins may be the result of genetics, pregnancy, excess weight, hormonal fluctuations or prolonged sitting and standing.
Varicose veins form when superficial veins become enlarged and cannot move blood as efficiently. The blood pools in the vein, resulting in the bulging, twisting veins that protrude above the surface of the skin. Once a vein is in this condition, it cannot return to its original state. Instead, treatment revolves around removing the affected vein, so that blood flow can be rerouted through the healthy, remaining veins in the area.
While varicose veins often begin as a cosmetic problem, if left unchecked, they can begin to cause uncomfortable physical symptoms as well. Some of the symptoms of varicose veins might include:
- Aching or heaviness
- Legs that fatigue easily
- Burning or itching
- Cramping
- Chronic ankle swelling
- Ulcerations
