Overview

Sclerotherapy is a non-invasive, effective way for treating spider veins and smaller varicose veins. This procedure injects a solution directly into the vein, causing the vein to collapse and seal shut. The spider vein will disappear from view completely within a matter of weeks, and blood flow will be rerouted through the healthy veins in the area. This procedure is quick, non-invasive and requires little downtime afterward. Many of our patients resume normal activities right after the procedure.

Candidates for Sclerotherapy

The best candidates for sclerotherapy will be individuals in relatively good health with spider veins or smaller varicose veins close to the surface of the skin. Women who are pregnant are not advised to undergo sclerotherapy until after their pregnancy. Patients who have had blood clots in the past will be evaluated by our medical staff on a case-by-case basis to determine their eligibility for sclerotherapy. If the vein in question is one that could be used for future heart bypass surgery, it may not be treated unless we determine it is unusable for this purpose.

About the Procedure

Most of our sclerotherapy procedures done at the South Bend Vein Center take just a few minutes to complete, depending on the number of veins to be treated. Patients are usually asked to refrain from applying lotion to the legs and some may begin an antibiotic prior to treatment. The solution is injected directly into the vein, using a very fine needle. Some patients experience mild cramping as the solution goes into the vein, which only lasts for a minute or two.

After the Procedure

After the procedure, patients can return to normal activities. Mild side effects, such as itching or minor swelling at the injection sites, will dissipate on their own within a few days. Most of our patients are instructed to wear compression stockings after the procedure to promote healing of the vessels. Our office can fit you with compression stockings after your treatment..
