Endovenous Laser Ablation
Overview
This minimally invasive procedure uses ultra-thin laser fibers inserted directly into the varicose vein to heat the vein and seal it shut. This procedure is highly effective on even larger varicose veins, offering a non-invasive alternative to vein stripping. The procedure is performed right in our South Bend office, and most patients resume normal activities immediately after treatment.
Candidates for EVLA
The best candidate for EVLA is an individual in relatively good health that has larger varicose veins to get rid of. The procedure is not typically recommended on veins that might be used for coronary procedures later in life. Our professional staff at South Bend Vein Center can help you decide if EVLA is the best treatment option for you.
About the Procedure
EVLA takes anywhere from 30-60 minutes to perform, depending on the number of veins to be treated. The patient is asked to wear protective goggles during the procedure to protect eyes from the laser light. The skin around the treatment area is usually anesthetized to enhance the patient's comfort during the procedure. Once the patient is ready, our doctor inserts a long, thin laser wire through the skin and directly into the vein. The laser is then heated to destroy the walls of the vein in question, causing them to shrink and eventually seal up. After the vein is treated, the fiber is removed and a dressing is applied to the site.
After the Procedure
There is virtually no recovery time after EVLA and patients are encouraged to walk around and return to normal activities right after treatment. We ask that patients wear compression stockings for the first few days after the procedure to aid the healing process, and we can fit you for these stockings right in our office. Any minor soreness can be treated with an over the counter pain medication. We ask patients to come back in a week after their procedure for a follow-up visit.
