Ambulatory Phlebectomy
Overview
Ambulatory phlebectomy is an effective method for removing large, bulging varicose veins from the leg. This procedure is done in our South Bend office using a local anesthesia and usually takes an hour or less to complete. The procedure involves tiny incisions that allow a small hook to be inserted to grab the affected vein and pull it from the leg for removal. The incisions are so small, that the patient experiences little or no scarring afterward.
Candidates for Ambulatory Phlebectomy
This procedure is primarily used for patients with large, bulging varicose veins. It is not a good option for patients who cannot walk on their own or wear the prescribed compression stockings after the procedure. In some cases, ambulatory phlebectomy may be combined with other treatments for best results.
About the Procedure
Ambulatory phlebectomy is done under local anesthesia and usually takes between 30 and 60 minutes to complete. Our doctor makes tiny incisions along the location of the vein, in order to insert a small hook that grasps the vein and pulls it from the leg. The vein is removed in small parts and the ends that are left are tied off and placed back into the leg. The patient is given compression dressings after the procedure.
After the Procedure
Most patients can walk around right after the procedure, although strenuous activity and heavy lifting is prohibited for a few days. The patient will be asked to wear compression stockings after treatment, to minimize swelling and promote healing. Mild pain or swelling can be treated at home with over the counter pain medication.
